Last week, Prospect House brought back the joy of Christmas to the grey skies of January with our first-ever staff pantomime. (Oh yes, we did!) Teachers from both the Lower and the Upper Schools came together to perform the ever-popular Jack and the Beanstalk.

The fun began long before the curtain rose. Backstage, staff haggled over roles – who would strut their stuff as the Dame, or rock the Fairy’s twinkle-toed tutu? After much debate (and a fair bit of “gentle encouragement”), the cast was finalised. And what a cast it was! Fridays in the autumn term quickly became rehearsal days with practices squeezed in after school then daily evening run-throughs in the two weeks leading up to the big night.

Mrs Gray threw herself into the role of the villainous Fleshcreep (Boo! Hiss!), rather too easily trading her usual sparkle and sunshine for a devilish grin and impressively menacing cackle! Meanwhile, the rest of the cast brought energy, enthusiasm, and plenty of laughter to their roles, as well as throwing some rather dubious shapes in the Backstreet Boys and Hero group dance routines!

The pantomime was not just a showcase of hidden talent but also a wonderful example of the school’s incredible sense of community. Without exception, all staff (teaching and non-teaching) willingly took part, if not on stage, then behind the scenes: from prop design and tech management to serving drinks and putting up the stage. It was truly a team effort.

The willingness of the staff to step out of their comfort zones – and occasionally make fools of themselves – brought joy to all. The children loved seeing their teachers in a new light and parents appreciated the effort that went into creating such as memorable event.

We cannot wait to start on next year’s performance! (Oh yes, we can!)
